Light BulbI’m almost sure you probably came here with a ‘fingers crossed’ – ‘eyebrow-raised’ feeling just to see what this is all about.
Yes, there really is one most important factor that distinguishes successes from failures in just about anything in life. Be it Academic excellence, financial stability or freedom, happiness, or just being awesome. Anyone is guaranteed to succeed, in time, in whatever it is they set their heart to do if this one factor is present.

As we go along, I will ask some questions to drive the point home.

Have you ever flunked a test, given up on a dream, reduced your ‘bulldog goals’ to puppy objectives?

Your answer probably is yes to one or more of those questions and there is one reason why you didn’t succeed in those ventures. If you can get that right, you will be unstoppable.
That Most Important factor is your DECISION TO WIN. In any of those scenarios, you reached a point where you wondered, ‘Is this goal really worth this stress?’ and your answer was ‘NO’.

Most of the time, we have failed in our minds already, before the actual physical play out. We have already decided we would give it only one or two shots, or try that program out for a month or two, and if it doesn’t work, we bail.

I’m not talking about mere wishes to be great in life, hopes that life and fate will favour you or anything like that. I’m talking about a COMMITTED DETERMINATION to succeed in that thing you want to do AT ALL COSTS, NO MATTER HOW LONG IT TAKES. Call it a WINNER’S ATTITUDE.

Some call it paying the price, or burning the bridges behind you, or not looking back and this has nothing to do with any voodoo or metaphysical rituals but no one has ever attained success without paying the price. This differs from one person to another but we all must overcome this stage in varying measures depending on how big our dreams are and how close we are to succeeding.

How big is your dream and how much do you desire it?

Thomas Edison, inventor of the electric light bulb

The famous Thomas Edison, inventor of the electric light bulb, succeeded after over 10,000 attempts. It’s almost unbelievable for someone to have that many attempts at a single project. Let’s stop to consider what made Edison keep at this insane experiment.

When Thomas Edison was interviewed by a young reporter who boldly asked Mr Edison if he felt like a failure and if he thought he should just give up by now. Perplexed, Edison replied, “Young man, why would I feel like a failure? And why would I ever give up? I now know DEFINITELY over 9,000 ways that an electric bulb will not work. Success is almost in my grasp.” Shortly after that, and over 10,000 attempts, Edison invented the light bulb.

One need not wonder what would have happened or what life would be like if Edison had given up at just over 9,000 attempts. But Edison simple had a DECISION TO WIN that was greater than any challenge he was set to face. So great was it that he didn’t count those failed attempts as failures, he automatically took them as INFORMATION. He had set his mind to succeed at all costs or die trying.  Until you make that decision and stand by it, your dreams are still mere castles in the air.

It would be fool-hardy to say that Edison was just a genius and was never faced with the option of quitting, but his DETERMINATION TO SUCCEED AT ALL COSTS NO MATTER HOW LONG was bigger than the urge to quit each and every time.
The thing is you will never know for certain if you could be successful at something if you quit.

Some people say life is not fair. I think life is very fair. We do not all start with the same resources but we all have the time and opportunities to be the best we can be. And every now and then, life throws those opportunities in our faces; sometimes as challenges, but it now depends on how prepared we are to recognise the hidden rewards and to give it our best shot. Life is fair and just, because every single living human has THE POWER OF DECISION. This is the yard stick for success, not being born with a silver spoon, or into the right family, or in the right country.

One thing I know for sure is SUCCESS NEVER COMES BY LUCK. It eludes the faint at heart, and runs to those who are prepared to give all for it.
So when next you feel that urge to quit, just know that before you is an opportunity to move a step closer to your goal just by DECIDING to stick on.
Is your dream that big? Mine is.

Points to remember

So I have put out some points to remember that will help you.

  1. Is your dream/goal big enough to stake all you have for it?
  2. Have you decided to succeed at all costs, no matter how long it takes or the ridicule you may encounter from friends and family?
  3. Have you weighed the rewards of succeeding against the odds of failing? Which one is stronger?
  4. What if you succeed at your next attempt? Are you prepared to live your life never knowing if you could have succeeded with just one more try?

I discovered that we can really become anything we want to be in life, have as much money, happiness and fulfilment as we could ever want. The question is if we are ready to pay the price for it. This is the path I am on. The path to being AWESOME!
